6 RV Tips for Traveling with Pets

Heading out on a camping trip with pets is totally doable – but you definitely want to make sure to do it right so you can enjoy the best road trip ever with your fur baby! Here are some of our top RV tips for camping safely and traveling with pets.

Before Leaving

Chances are, your pet is already used to a road trip or two, but if getting in the car causes motion sickness or anxiety, have a plan before you leave. Ask your vet for recommended medications that might help with either. Also, schedule a vet appointment to have your pet microchipped and all shots up to date, as well as preventative flea and tick treatments.

Check the Campground Policies

Make sure to check the campground policies before arriving to see what the rules are for camping with pets, including noise/aggression guidelines (including barking), pet waste removal, or leash requirements.

Pack the Essentials

Pack for your pet, too! Not just pet food and treats, but also medication they may be currently taking. The following list includes other good ideas:

  • Doggie waste bags (an absolute must! Pack and use them!)
  • Leash
  • Pet first aid kit
  • Pet toys your fur baby loves

Get a Current Photo

You probably have a ton of photos on your phone of your pet, but make sure to take a current one that is front facing, clear, and well lit. You’ll also want additional angle shots that show any special markings your pet has. These photos will be essential to have on hand in the unfortunate event your pet gets loose.

Adjust Your Expectations

You’ll want to plan to add in extra travel time to the road trip. This gives your dog time to stretch its legs, run off some energy, enjoy a game of fetch, and relieve itself. A few extra minutes at each stop along the way will make for a more comfortable road trip for everyone involved!
